Our strategy focused on creating a residence that honors classical European architectural traditions while providing the openness and light demanded by contemporary lifestyles. We deliberately employed authentic period elements—mansard roof with elegant dormers, arched windows with mullioned detailing, and decorative cornices—executed with exceptional craftsmanship to achieve genuine architectural character rather than pastiche imitation. The extensive use of steel-framed glazing was conceived as a thoughtful modern intervention, allowing the classical envelope to embrace transparency and connection to nature without compromising its historical integrity. The color palette of warm limestone and slate blue-gray was selected to create a sophisticated visual harmony with the surrounding autumn foliage, allowing the building to appear both distinguished and naturally at home in its setting. This approach aimed to create a residence that offers the romance and grandeur of old-world architecture while delivering the comfortable, light-filled spaces and indoor-outdoor flow that define luxury living today.

Process

The development began with extensive research into French Second Empire and Beaux-Arts architectural precedents, identifying authentic proportioning systems and detailing that could be faithfully recreated. Master stonemasons and metalworkers were engaged to execute the ornamental elements, ensuring each corbel, cornice, and balustrade exhibited genuine craftsmanship. The curved dormers required particularly sophisticated engineering and fabrication techniques to achieve their graceful proportions while meeting modern weather-resistance standards. The steel window systems demanded exact precision in both manufacturing and installation to maintain the clean sightlines essential to the design's successful balance of classical form and contemporary transparency. Interior spaces were configured to create elegant sight lines through the home and into the landscape, with ceiling heights and room proportions carefully calibrated to create a sense of grandeur without sacrificing intimacy. The landscape design established a series of outdoor rooms that extend the formal architectural language into the garden while framing views of the mature autumn trees beyond.
